As the days grow shorter and the 4:30 PM sunsets in New York City leave us yearning for light, a new immersive experience promises to brighten your winter nights. STARSCAPE, a captivating light installation at Genesis House in the Meatpacking District, invites you to explore the beauty of darkness and the wonders of the cosmos. Designed by the talented Ethan Tobman, known for his work as creative director for The Eras Tour, this free exhibit offers a unique escape from the winter chill.

STARSCAPE Journey Through the Longest Night

Inspired by Dongji, the Korean Winter Solstice, STARSCAPE takes visitors on an awe-inspiring journey through the longest night of the year. Upon entering Genesis House, guests are greeted by a luxurious lounge before descending into the darkened exhibition space. The experience begins with stunning panels hanging from the ceiling, each serving as a backdrop for vibrant, colorful displays.

As you walk through the exhibit, geometric light fixtures coordinate with bursts of color, creating a mesmerizing visual feast. A total of 590 glowing lights emulate the constellations that connect Seoul and New York, highlighting the beauty of our shared night sky. This artistic connection between two vibrant cities is both enchanting and thought-provoking, reminding us of the universal experiences we share, no matter where we are.

STARSCAPE Immersive Light Experience

The main event of STARSCAPE is nothing short of breathtaking. Unlike typical immersive installations that rely solely on projectors, this exhibit uses LED projections that envelop every inch of the space—walls, ceiling, and floor. As you move through the exhibit, fast-moving constellations and bursts of starlight create a dynamic environment that celebrates the magic of the night sky.

The journey through STARSCAPE is designed to evoke emotions, from the warmth of burning embers in a traditional Korean Hanok to the wonder of stars twinkling above. Tobman’s vision blends light and sound to examine our connection with the cosmos, offering a cinematic and transportive experience that is both personal and communal.

Culinary Delights to Enhance Your Visit

To enhance your STARSCAPE experience, why not indulge in some culinary delights at the Genesis House Restaurant? Guests can access the installation exclusively on Tuesday through Sunday evenings from 7 PM to 10 PM. The restaurant features special menu items inspired by the exhibit, including the Bukdu Chilseong cocktail, a delightful mix of night sky gin, dry vermouth, maraschino, absinthe, and orange bitters. For dessert, try the Starlight Choux, which combines apple, jujube, crème chantilly, and starlight craquelin—both visually stunning and delicious!

Embracing NYC’s Unique Experiences

STARSCAPE at Genesis House is more than just an art installation; it’s a celebration of light, culture, and the human experience. Open through January 12, STARSCAPE is a must-see for anyone looking to embrace the magic of winter in NYC. With no reservations required, simply arrive at Genesis House, located at 40A 10th Ave, and immerse yourself in this celestial journey. Let the beauty of darkness inspire you this winter, reminding us all that even the longest nights can be full of wonder.
